National Broadband Ireland (NBI) will be the designer, builder and operator of the ultrafast broadband network for rural Ireland. It's vision is for a world-class, gigabit-speed broadband for every home, farm, school and business in areas of the country that are not fully served by commercial operators. It guarantees a level playing field for 1.1million people, 540,000 premises including 100,000 businesses and farms and over 600 schools.

Rollout will commence in Q4 of 2019, with most premises being passed in the initial 5 years, with the full project completion at 7 years.

NBI are hiring a Chief Legal Officer to join the team. Reporting to the CEO, this is a full time permanent position that will take responsiblity for directly influencing senior stakeholders and providing pragmatic advice on a variety of legal and regulatory issues.

This is a high profile commercial legal role which requires someone with a proven successful leadership background within a high performing legal function. You will be providing a best practice legal service ensuring robust compliance procedures and risk assessments are made in line with NBI's group culture.

Main Duties:

  • Overall responsiblity for all aspects of the legal & regulatory function
  • Provision of business coverage and support, including Commercial Contracts, Regulatory Employment, Intellectual Property and Transactional / Deal support.
  • Oversight of Regulatory relations
  • Management of litigation portfolio
  • Regulatory strategy and policy
  • Provide legal guidance, advice and documentation on supply chain activities, which encompasses development and supply of products and services.
  • Management of professional relationships - regulatory, tax and legal firms where appropriate
  • Work with Heads of function of all regulatory legal and commercial legal issues.
  • Ongoing identification of inefficiencies and compliance issues.
  • Manage a small team


  • Qualified lawyer, solicitor, barrister with 10+ years PQE/coporate experience
  • Excellent knowledge of Irish laws and regulations in the telecoms sector in Ireland
  • Experience in negotiating/reviewing/drafting complex commercial agreements/contracts
  • Competitive advantage, ensuring knowledge is current and relevant in order to anticipate and provide advice on potential legal risks
  • Strong track record in consulting with senior business leaders and managers
  • Telco or hi-tech sector experience is a distinct advantage
  • Results orientated, strategic thinker and planner
  • Outstanding internal and external communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to connect with people on legal and regulatory issues and very confident to argue a case for necessary change
  • Demonstrates flexibility and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done - be willing and able to "roll-up sleeves" and apply them self to any task
  • Driven person with a strong team ethic
