Every wondered why they didn't call you back, what you did wrong on a date, or why you just can’t find the one? We all have those feelings and fears and it is exactly the same finding your dream job too.
You’ve applied to a job that looks fantastic. You just know you’d be the perfect match for that company so spend some good time and effort on that opening line and changed your CV to fit what they’re looking for. They reply and see you as a prospect; optimism is back in the door and you’re retracting all the bad things you said while you waited. Even after asking a few questions, it seems like something you’d like to progress with and - BOOM – you’ve got an interview date.
The day has arrived and you go in making your best impression “suited and booted”. The building is better than you thought, and the interviewer seems interesting and, even better, interested in what you’re saying. It goes on longer than expected and there were even hints at a second interview, so you walk out that door smiling.
Of course the second you step out the door, you’re straight on the phone to your friends relaying everything; what the building was like, the questions, the answers. After all the encouragement from your friends, you know you’ve nailed it.
A few days have past now and no phone call; not even an email. We’ve gone back to the pre-interview fear of “do they not like me?” It was definitely a good interview though because they smiled when you left, so the optimism is still there.
They finally send through a standard HR regret email with no explanations. This was unexpected. All the questions run through your head:
No, you think to yourself, they must have just found someone else.
While it is possible the company did find someone else, you should always focus on why the chosen person wasn’t you and how you can improve. Perhaps your version of “suited and booted” isn’t up to the company standard or perhaps you didn’t give tangible answers to competency questions.
