Let's take a closer look at the Opportunities and Trends within the Mechanical Design and R&D market across Ireland...
We’ve seen many changes across the area of Mechanical Design and R&D within the last 12 months. Keen to stay away from this being just “another Brexit blog” - it is worth mentioning that Brexit has had a significant impact on the Irish Mechanical Design and R&D market. The most noteworthy change we have seen within the market is the sizeable decline in open opportunities from this time 12 months ago to now. However, all is not lost. Although opportunities are not ten a penny on a nationwide basis, there is optimism within key areas including Dublin, Cork and Galway.
The Dublin market has always focused across a mix of industries – Precision Engineering, Machine Building, Heavy Industry, Medical Device and Medical Equipment. Within these industries the most noteworthy rise has been seen within the Precision Engineering and Medical Equipment sectors. More often than not, the Precision Engineering industry are always looking for experienced Tooling Design Engineers and Mechanical Design Engineers with at least 2 years post grad experience. Experience within a fast-paced, highly regulated, Design to Manufacturing environment is always sought after. Automation is a big buzz word within Dublin, almost across all industries but particularly within the area of Medical Equipment. Many of the clients that I work with would be looking for experienced Engineers with prior exposure to designing automated equipment which can provide real time analysis. Outside of the titles and experience that companies are seeking, there is also an interesting shift in clients looking for candidates with Siemens NX 3D modelling experience. It goes without saying that Solidworks is still the most widely used 3D software package but upskilling in Siemens NX would be highly beneficial.
This is tough for me to say as a very proud “Corkonian” but Cork is abit behind Dublin with regards to opportunities across the area of Mechanical Design and R&D. Medical Device would be Corks strongest market – mainly due to the Medical Device companies we have present in our glorious county. Within these companies, there is a big push to see Product Development and Electro-Mechanical Design Engineers. The biggest trend that has been noticed within Cork would be the seismic increase in start-ups. For all the opportunities I would recruit for, a number of the most interesting would be on behalf of start-up companies. Outside of the technical skills needed, these clients are always looking for dynamic, diverse and strategic individuals that can always see the “big picture”.
For the most part, all that needs to be said for Galway is Medical Device. This is by far the most prominent industry within Galway across Design, Product Development and R&D , but this is nothing new. The clients that I work with within Galway are always looking for individuals with a minimum of 2 years post grad experience within the Medical Device industry. Exposure to designing and developing delivery systems, caterers and stents are always much sought after. Similar to Dublin, Solidworks is the software of choice within Galway. Exposure to FEA Analysis through systems such as Ansys is also extremely welcomed.
With all this being said, I have a number of open opportunities that I am currently recruiting for. To view the full list of all my open opportunities feel free to click HERE. If you don’t have time to search through my open opportunities, then just give myself a call. If you have experience across Mechanical Design, R&D, Product Development and Electronics and you’re looking for a new challenge then I am keen to speak with you.
If you don’t have experience in the above but you work within the area of Engineering then Morgan McKinley would still be keen to help you. I’m only one person from a fantastic team of 10 experienced consultants who cover Manufacturing, Automation, Process, Facilities, Maintenance, Quality and Validation on both a contract and permanent basis.
