Starting your career in science

Aoife Duggan 07.11.2019

Science week is upon us (10-17th Nov) and what better time to reflect on the surge of recruitment in this area and how to break into this lucrative industry.

Ireland is now home to all 10 of the top 10 global pharma companies. Also, there are 90 biopharma manufacturing plans in Ireland, over 40 of which are FDA approved, and 22 Biotech sites either built or under construction. Keeping this in mind, the demand for talent across science disciplines shows no signs of slowing down.

The most sought after professionals by our clients are the following:

  • QC Chemistry Analyst
  • QC Microbiology Analyst
  • QC Biologics Analyst
  • Stability Analyst
  • Lab Systems Specialist
  • Process Chemists
  • Process Scientist/Specialist
  • Tech Services Chemist
  • Analytical Chemist
  • Bioprocess Chemist

We see candidates coming to market from a wide range of degrees however the common theme is that the course studied normally has a strong emphasis on one of the following areas:

  • Biotechnology
  • Biopharmaceuticals
  • Chemistry
  • Microbiology

Graduates from courses with more of a Biology/Microbiology focused degrees tend to veer towards the Large Molecule sector (biologic products). This area is undergoing significant growth and will continue to see a surge over the next few years.

Graduates from Chemistry focused degrees tend to gain employment quicker in the Small Molecule sector chemically manufactured products).

Finally, those looking to specialise further may continue their education and gain a Master or a PhD. The most common areas for study that lead to the “most employable” candidates are Organic and Inorganic Chemistry.
Organic Chemists are in hot demand in the Bio sector where are as Inorganic Chemists are sought after for positions in classic Pharmas.

Regardless of the area of study within science you choose to pursue, one thing is for sure, your career will thank you for choosing science.
