Science Week shines a light on scientific research Ireland | #BelieveInScience

This week on the science recruitment desk it has been all things Science Week. We just stopped short of getting #BelieveInScience printed on t-shirts.

The Science Foundation Ireland has partnered with organisations and businesses across Ireland, including running science festivals in every corner of the country. The resources and work put into the week-long event reflects the importance of the sector in Ireland.

The week and its associated activities are driven and funded by the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) which is the statutory body in the Republic of Ireland with responsibility for funding basic and applied research in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with a strategic focus.

One of the highlights of the week was the Annual Science Summit, which took place in Dublin’s Croke Park Hotel, on Monday 13th November 2017, providing 350 SFI-funded researchers and stakeholders with a unique opportunity to hear about the collective output of the agency, and the social and economic impact of the excellent scientific research it funds.

The aforementioned funding is quite substantial with a budget of over €170 million being confirmed for 2018 at the event. This demonstrates the importance the state places on continued research into science-related topics in order to stay at the forefront of the industry.

On the night a light was shone on Ireland’s Standing in Global Research & Innovation. It was revealed that Ireland is in 10th place in global rankings for the overall quality of scientific research, moving up 26 places in only 13 years. Additionally Ireland ranked second for Global excellence in Immunology and Nanotechnology.

Based on these fantastic findings it comes as no surprise that scientists in Ireland are in high demand by global pharma and bio phama companies. On the science recruitment desk here in Morgan McKinley are continuously looking for candidates with all levels of experience in these sectors.
