Morgan McKinley recently hosted an Espresso Breakfast Briefing to provide our attendees with an insight into our journey so far in preparation for incoming GDPR regulations. Our attendees were eager to find out more, with over 60 people in attendance.
Karen O’Flaherty provided the opening address, outlining her thoughts around incoming GDPR, and the changes that we will all experience in how our businesses prepare and adapt to such a huge change to data usage.
Our event covered two topics. One included a particularly interesting briefing on incoming employment law delivered by Valerie Farrell of Nolan Farrell & Goff solicitors, Waterford. Valerie highlighted particularly relevant updates, for our audience of HR professionals and managers including:
- 2017 minimum wage increase
- Flexible working hours Contracts
- Gender pay gap
- Retirement ages
- Reasonable accommodation for disability
- Right to legal representation – cross examination in internal investigations
- Employees on sick leave
- Right to privacy / email monitoring
Following this, Stuart McCaul from Morgan McKinley
brought us through our journey to date, in preparation of GDPR. This included timelines of various activities undertaken. This proved a useful visual guide for our attendees who find themselves on the same preparation journey in their respective businesses.
Stuart included some live polling throughout, which provided immediate responses from the audience around their journey and levels of preparation undertaken to date. Early feedback among attendees demonstrated their relief (in some cases) that they weren’t alone in their concerns, and their appreciation on having gained insight into others’ journey preparation also.
Our audience participated throughout, with live polling and engaging Q&A to our panel, at the end of the presentations.
Huge thanks to our local team Geraldine Butler
and Joanne O’Leary
for providing a warm welcome to all participants. In particular, thanks to Lesley Cooke
who instigated the event, organised our guest speaker and arranged the hotel preparations ahead of this event.
