Social networking not key in hiring strategy for 72% of Irish employers [press release]

Aldagh McDonogh 24.10.2011

As social media becomes prolific, Morgan McKinley Ireland surveyed 375 HR managers and senior business leaders to find out to what extent employers across the country are using it in their recruitment strategies. The findings show that nearly three quarters (72%) of respondents have not hired anyone through social networking, while only a quarter have hired at least one person in this way.

With 5,884 visitors to Morgan McKinley’s website coming from social networking sites as of January 2011, it’s clear that a high number of active job seekers are using social media for their professional networking and job hunting. Of the employers surveyed who hadn’t recruited in this way, 41% have shown some interest by either looking for job seekers on social networking sites (12%) or stating they would hire in this way in future (29%).

When asked whether they use social networking to do background checks, over a quarter of respondents (29%) said they have done so. By far the most popular site was LinkedIn – 77% would use it as the first place they would look online for information to help them find the right people for their organisation while only 8% would use Facebook. However, despite this, 70% of all respondents have not used social media at all to find additional information on interviewees with 20% stating it is not something they would use at all.

Similarly, 30% of respondents said they would not use social networking to find their own career opportunities although, close to half (49%) have already done so. A further 21% have not yet used social networking to find a job for themselves, saying that they would in future.

In addition, over half (55%) of hiring managers revealed that they are restricted in use of social networking in the office by their company’s social media policy.

Trefor Murphy, Operations Director, Morgan McKinley Ireland commented:

“Our survey reflects that social networking is relatively low priority for employers, compounded by the fact that 55% of respondents are restricted in some way by their company’s social media policies. Although there is some appetite to use social media to replace traditional methods of sourcing talent, such as press advertising and for background research, the businesses we work with tell us that they continue to value our consultancy recruitment services – in particular face-to-face interaction, networking and personal referrals.

“Where employers are limited in their use of social networking for hiring, Morgan McKinley has an active presence on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter and is the first recruiter in Ireland to launch an application for job seekers to apply for roles using their LinkedIn profile directly through our website. As well as continuing to use best practice recruitment techniques, we constantly strive for innovation and are confident that use of social networking plus traditional hiring techniques will enable us to remain the market leader in Irish recruitment.”

Wade Burgess, Senior Director Northern Europe, LinkedIn Hiring Solutions added:

"The gap is widening between organisations who are effectively leveraging social media and those who are relying only on traditional methods to acquire talent. Many of today's professionals manage their identity, ‘social graph’, and insights via professional networks like LinkedIn. Strategic use of social networking in conjunction with existing recruitment techniques will increasingly help businesses to identify tomorrow's top talent.”
