2016 HR Salary & Benefits Guide

April Fenton 12.01.2016

The HR 2016 Salary & Benefits Guide covers salary ranges for professionals working in generalist human resources, recruitment and talent acquisition, training and development, compensation and benefits and in other HR positions.

The HR market was very busy in Dublin throughout 2015 with steady growth in Cork while the Regions remained somewhat subdued.

Recruitment specialists at all levels of experience were in high demand as in house Talent Acquisition teams enlarged their numbers to cope with increasing demand from businesses for additional headcount.   This demand was seen across all sectors but specifically in engineering, pharmaceuticals, medical device and IT sectors. HR Generalist and HR Business Partners with strong operational experience also saw increased opportunities in the market.

There was little activity at the Director or Vice President level with more focus on mid-management roles especially outside Dublin.  There was an increase in hiring into the HR function within SME’s which had seen little activity in recent years.  These hires were HR generalist who could act as a strong business partner with broad experience in recruitment, compensation and benefits, industrial relations or employee engagement. Larger multinational companies in IT, FMCG and financial services sought more in-depth specialist experience from their HR hires.

Ireland remains somewhat conservative in terms of HR professionals being able to move between sectors compared to other countries. Organisations are often more inclined to bring in HR professionals who inject a fresh view. This further contributes to the lack of fluidity within the discipline despite the economic upturn and means that early career choices are hugely important.

The quality of professionals on the market who are actively seeking new opportunities is excellent. These include Irish nationals returning from jobs abroad who have gained insights into the discipline’s evolving trends. Exposure to international environments will give jobseekers a distinct advantage.

There are many contract-based opportunities, typically lasting six to nine months, for learning and development, systems upgrade and other projects. Contract rates of pay tend to reflect permanent salaries broken down to a daily or hourly rate, unless the contracted employee has a specific in-demand skill that commands a premium. There is also a trend towards highly experienced HR professionals working on a consultancy basis for several clients – and these individuals can command substantial fees.

The gender balance remains heavily weighted towards females at the mid-career level, who may be less inclined to move jobs because of family commitments. This is beginning to change, albeit slowly as women drive their careers to move into senior roles and more men enter the discipline.

Overall there was little change in permanent salaries in 2015, with increases averaging 3% to 5%. HR generalists who bring a highly in-demand specialist skill can often push for salaries above the norm, but these are the exceptions rather than the rule. We expect the HR market to grow a little faster in 2016 and this may translate into higher overall rates of pay.
