Docker Cork and Morgan McKinley meet up

Chris Hartnett 12.04.2018

On April 5th, Morgan McKinley teamed up with Docker Cork to host their second meetup of the year.

Docker Cork is about bringing together like-minded technical individuals to discuss emerging technologies in principal and production, particularly in the DevOps area. you to meet other developers and ops engineers in your community that are using and learning about Docker.

Docker is an open platform that helps you build, ship and run applications anytime and anywhere. Developers use Docker to modify code and to streamline application development, while operations gain support to quickly and flexibly respond to their changing needs. Docker ensures agility, portability and control for all your distributed apps.

On the night, we had up excellent speakers to discuss the latest technical trends and how they are negating these trends on a daily basis:

  • Oisin Sheehy from Mobacar in Killarney gave us an insight into Chaos Engineering and how Netflix introduced it into their production environment. Oisin explained how he has cherry picked some Chaos fundamentals, while adding his own touches to improve processes.
  • Our second speaker was Pierre Vincent from Poppulo, fresh from speaking at QCon in London, who spoke about “Building Observable Distributed Systems”.
The talk was based around being able to observe the state of a running application and how it’s important to understanding a system's behavior and essential if you want to fix production problems quickly and efficiently. Like a lot of other things, this is harder to do in distributed systems than it is with a monolith. Pierre spoke about key techniques to building a clearer picture of distributed applications in production, including details on useful health checks, best practices for instrumentation with metrics, logging and tracing.

Both presentations were excellent and really sparked debate among the audience and this provided some excellent talking points and even some suggestions for presentations at the next meet up in the summer. Huge thank you to Morgan McKinley for sponsoring the pizza, goodies and refreshments on the night.
