What do you first think of? Gender, age, race, cultural background… but there’s a lot more to it.
It’s been my observation since returning to the Irish workplace after working 7 years abroad that diversity in the workplace is lacking in Ireland!
I’ve worked in recruitment for over 5 years in Australia, and I’ve recently joined the HR recruitment desk within Morgan McKinley. I’ve recruited for many organisations that embrace diversity, it’s just part of the company’s over-all vision – they get it!
Diversity helps businesses gain a competitive edge in global markets. What business doesn’t want to be better than their competitors?
There’ much more to creating a diverse workplace than hiring people who fit into different age brackets or creating the perfect male to female ratio. According to a recent report in the Irish Times, diversity in the workplace increases HR responsibilities and holds the department more accountable. Workplace diversity goals can require change to recruitment strategy or outreach in-order to identify a diverse pool of suitable talent. HR expertise is important in evaluating where diverse talent are best placed in the business so they can make the most valuable contributions.
The main challenge facing businesses today is how to attract the best talent and retain them in a constantly changing environment. Global studies have shown that diversity in the work place is one of the answers to this challenge! You can read more about the benefits of work place diversity here.
