Pre the triggering of Article 50, the rumours were already afloat that Irish ports would capitalise on our Anglo-Saxon neighbours' decision to part from the EU.
The port of Foynes in Limerick has already been established as one such solution to Theresa May’s Hard Brexit proposal. If Brexit means Brexit then Irish ports will be a financially more viable option for countries outside of Britain and outside of the EU. This will also apply to countries looking to export from the EU to the US.
With the port of Rotterdam already at capacity, Irish ports should see a freight boom. Cork's port is in fact planning for this, looking to deploy more direct freight routes between Ireland and mainland Europe due to Brexit. There are other suggestions to the Brexit logistics conundrum too, such as Donegal potentially becoming a port destination and in the next few years there’s likely to be a dramatic overhaul on imports and exports to, from and most intriguingly “through” Ireland, whether we are prepared for it or not. Exciting times indeed!
