Desirable skills & qualifications in accounting and finance

There has there been an increasing demand in particular for skills relating to:

  • Big 4 experience
  • 2-3 years' post qualified
  • EMEA high volume experience

Often we find candidates asking themselves the question, what can I do to stand out against other candidates? Don’t simply focus on your technical skills. Obviously, an employer needs to know that you have the technical skills required to do the job, but the reality is that most applicants will have a lot of the same skills as you.

Job seeker & hiring manager motivations

Recruitment of accounting and finance job seekers in Q1 was buoyant with asset management, investment banking, fintech and regulatory changes influencing hiring trends. Within the accounting and finance recruitment, it is evident that job seekers and hiring manager motivations include industry exposure, new ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system exposure and career progression.

To stand out, right from your cover letter through to the interview, you need to focus on what makes you unique. Really reflect on your life, not just your profession, to identify what you have that others likely don’t. Is it that you have more knowledge in a specific area than most people?
