You’ve worked really hard to get to where you are today. Your software development skills are phenomenal and you’re “in-demand” but are you making the most of the opportunities out there?

We’ve put together a list of our 5 top tips to help you become a successful IT contractor and to keep you moving up that ladder!

1. Flexibility

As a contractor, you’ll likely experience working with a variety of different employers and in numerous companies over the course of your career. Being willing to adapt to new situations and to embrace the opportunities in each company will help you.

2. Clarity

Make sure that you’re very clear about your rate, role, location and skill set. This will avoid any potential confusion when it comes to your job requirements and will ensure that you don’t miss out on any new exciting opportunities.

3. Embracing new ways of being hired

New platforms such as pingmmk, offer you the chance to showcase your skills directly to employers, taking the time hassle out of your job search process. A few minutes of your time creating and updating a profile can mean you'll have extra billing hours!

4. The small print

Make sure that your new contract is what you expected. Spend some time on it and read it thoroughly. Do a little research and check out the current salaries for your skill-set and experience so you're neither under - nor over-charging!

5. The future

How does your new role fit into your plans for your future? It’s a good idea to take some time to consider how the role will look on your CV and contribute to your career. Try and take contracts that stay within your area of specialism, adding to your level of expertise in your particular skill but make sure that you keep building up other skills in order to add a little more flexibility to your offering.
