5 key points on Paternity Leave

Lesley Cooke 27.01.2017

Morgan McKinley hosted another successful Breakfast Briefing last week with Anne O'Connell of Sherwin O'Riordan Solicitors.

This is the second event we have had with Anne as a speaker and she is proving to be extremely popular amongst our clients. Anne covered some important topics on Employment Law and in particular, one key area which our clients found beneficial was her piece on Paternity Leave, which was brought into effect on the 1st September 2016.

Key points to note on Paternity Leave are:

  • 2 weeks leave can be taken within 28 weeks of birth or adoption
  • The 2 weeks leave must be taken consecutively
  • 4 weeks’ notice must be given in writing prior to leave
  • You are entitled to €230 per week - same as statutory maternity leave
  • On average, only one in four men claim for paternity leave

We plan to host further events like this one in the future and if anyone has any particular topics that they would like Anne to cover, please feel free to drop me an email with your suggestions.
