Commentary on Technology Permanent Roles and Remuneration in Ireland for 2019

Overview of 2018

It has been a busy year across the technology sector in general, and particularly in regards to the permanent market. Many companies were actively hiring including multinationals, SME’s and also tech startups. The market has therefore become very candidate focused, predominantly so in certain areas such as .Net, Security and Data Analytics. For hiring managers and employers in general over the past year, the key to success was their ability to act quickly and therefore attract, source and retain strong candidates. The market is moving at a rapid pace, with most professionals engaged in multiple interview processes at a time.

In Demand Roles

Focusing on the capital firstly, there has been continuous demand for professionals across the core development languages, which is expected to continue into the new year. In addition to this, Data, UX, Security and PMO have also emerged as big growth areas within technology. Demand has been mainly fueled in this region by the SME, Startup and Banking sectors, due to significant growth in each area. We have noticed particular interest from Financial Services institutions as technology and digital innovation has been a core focus area throughout 2018. Many tech companies within Dublin are designing increasingly complex digital products for an international audience. As a result, we've seen a growth in demand for talented UX Designers; ones who can help shape these products with the end user in mind.

Looking at the Cork market, the most popular roles were in Project Management, where a lot of projects have been kicking off across a number of organisations and new business is being won by consultancy companies which means they are looking for more Project Management resources. As well as this, Business Analysts, .Net Developers and Data Analysts are also in demand. This is due to a drive by organisations to start effectively using their data in order to add value through informed decision making. Some companies have been increasing their headcount in this area and other companies are bringing in Data Analysis skills for the very first time.

On a national outlook, there has been a significant standout in the demand for cyber security professionals from end to end of 2018. With the number of cyber attacks on the rise globally, the threat that hackers pose to businesses is ever-increasing and we have seen businesses in both the Dublin and Cork markets demonstrating keen interest in employing security specialists, or alternatively resorting to outsourcing their requirements to specialist organisations. Both scenarios leading to greater demand for more professionals in this space.

Market Developments & Workplace Trends

It may be a key topic in regards to the economy these days, but Brexit has not yet had a major impact on the permanent technology sector nationally. However, there does seem to be a slowdown in new ERP projects kicking off in 2018 as we near closer to its enactment date. That being said, as a whole, Ireland’s technology market continues to thrive and is definitely an attractive location for professionals. We expect that the effect of Brexit on the technology sector will be far less damaging than what other sectors may soon endure.

The most impactful legislative change of the year for the tech sector was arguably the enactment of GDPR. The roll out of this legislation left businesses across Ireland searching for experienced Data professionals who can harness and advise on the effective use of data. There was particular demand for DPOs (Data Protection Officers) and Security specialists along with the emergence new, more junior level privacy coordination positions.
After seeing a spike in the early summer months, hiring in this area subsequently slowed down come Autumn with the majority of domestic professionals having secured employment in this space before GDPR is due to come into effect.

In terms of workplace trends, flexible working conditions has jumped to the top of the list in regards to job seekers taking on new roles. More and more professionals are looking for flexible working hours and also the ability to work from home. There are also some unique workplace benefits which have been seen over the past year, for example a general €5,000 benefits package whereby each recipient can choose what way they want to utilize this themselves. Companies are looking towards offering some of the above in order to attract and retain talent.

Predictions for 2019

Looking towards 2019, the technology sector is going from strength to strength across all disciplines, with roles such as including Project Manager, Business Analyst, Product Manager, Java and .Net Developer, Security, Systems Administrators and Network Engineers set to continue to be popular roles in the year to come. The market for AI/ Machine Learning professionals is forecast to take centre stage in 2019 as we anticipate more employers will begin advertising specialized roles in this niche area.

We’ve seen exponential growth in the number of permanent professionals vacancies in 2018 with a 21% year on year increase in the Dublin market alone, which is expected to continue rising into 2019. The first quarter of 2019 is set to be a busy quarter with many new roles in the pipeline already and plenty potential for growth all round.

Advice for Employers

Advice to clients/hiring managers would be to move swiftly on talent of interest and always put your best foot forward when making an offer. Given Dublin is primarily a candidate driven market, expect that any potential hire will have opportunities elsewhere. Think about your key differentiators from other companies and articulate them clearly throughout the interview process.

Advice for Jobseekers

The main piece of advice for job seekers is to know your worth. As previously mentioned, it’s a candidate-driven market, meaning employers are continuously battling to secure the best available talent. Professionals should do their research and know their value when looking for their next move. Employers are prepared to pay above industry standard for top talent, so jobseekers should take advantage of the free information available to them when looking to secure their next role. Glassdoor and your personal network from LinkedIn can be a great tool for unbiased, impartial information on a prospective employer.
