2017 Science Salary Guide

Michelle Ahern 01.01.2017

The past 12 months has seen the science market particularly busy across pharmaceuticals, medical devices and diagnostics.

The top disciplines in demand remain in: Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA), Microbiology and Regulatory Affairs. An interesting development is that employers within these sectors are all seeking very similar experience, with the key difference being the industry experience these candidates have.

Included in the science salary guide are salary ranges for  Research & Development Salaries | Analytical Salaries | Clinical Trials / Statistics Salaries | Quality & Validation Salaries | New Product Development (NPD) Salaries | Other  |  Commentary

Commentary on Science Roles and Remuneration in Ireland for 2017

Throughout the year the market has swayed from being jobs driven to candidate driven. There are a large number of qualified, experienced candidates on the market while employers are seeking specific industry experience with no compromise on this requirement. For example; on the chemistry side there is a steady demand for experienced QC analysts who have specific instrumentation experience including High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC), Karl Fisher (KF), Dissolution, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). In comparison Microbiology job opportunities have been fewer this year, but equally demanding when it comes to specific experience required. Roles requiring Bioburden, Endotoxin and Environmental Monitoring experience remain available.

In terms of the gender mix - the balance tends to be very 50:50, this is evident at all levels within the science disciplines. For now, there are no predictions for this balance to change.

Due to the availability of third level education in science within Ireland, there is a consistent flow of candidates coming onto the market. Graduates in Science, Biotechnology, Analytical Chemistry and Microbiology are highly sought after. The demand for more biologics focused candidates is gradually increasing, this demand reflects the growth in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Ireland through new start-ups and pharmaceutical companies moving into the biologics space.

The science jobs market continues to be very heavily based around contract positions. Interestingly, demand for contractors reflects projects and new product lines that companies are launching. Permanent opportunities also come up but not as frequently as contracts do. A positive note with contracts is that they do tend to lead to an extension or conversion to permanent roles.

For the most part, salaries will remain competitive going into 2017 either offering a strong base salary for contract positions or lower salary with a robust package for permanent positions. Candidates interested in working shift based roles can avail of a strong base salary with an equally competitive shift allowance although salary is not always the deciding factor for candidates to move into a new role.
