2017 Accountancy in Shared Services Salary Guide

Jay Davitt, ACA 01.01.2017

Shared services centers (SSCs) continue to grow nationwide and remain a key employer for finance professionals across Ireland.

The SSC model is now a very mature one with the key advancements coming in the form of IT ERP systems and multinational companies (MNCs) broadening the amount of support functions provided within SSCs. MNCs have consistently targeted Ireland as a preferred location for SSCs due to the high level of education, training and availability of talent. Brexit and the US Election have led to some uncertainty in the SSC market, largely because of high number of US MNCs based in Ireland, although it is doubtful that we’ll see an immediate impact from either electoral outcome.

Commentary on Accountancy in Shared Services Roles and Remuneration in Ireland for 2017

Big 4 trained accountants remain in high demand, this can be an area of difficulty for a number of SSCs as this profile is in high demand across all industries. Experienced professionals with language skills remain in short supply, especially for SSCs seeking German, Dutch or Nordic languages skills. Transactional positions such as accounts payable and accounts receivable remain consistently in demand with EMEA payroll specialists also highly sought after.

Structures within SSCs typically provide strong career progression opportunities for those interested in working within a fast paced, dynamic and demanding environment. This can lead to a shortage of senior level roles on the open market with strong succession plans and internal progression retaining top talent.

2016 salaries remained at a similar level to 2015, newly qualified accountants in Dublin continuing to secure up to €55K for a GL accountant / financial reporting positions. The biggest change has been the volume of opportunities for these candidates - multiple offers and counter offers are occurring more frequently when compared with 2015.

A predicted area for growth heading into 2017 will be the hybrid IT / finance positions where a high level of enterprise resource planning (ERP) knowledge is required. This is in line with many SSCs investing heavily to automate and improve overall processes. Job titles such as systems accountant, ERP specialist and IT internal auditors are becoming more common than in previous years.
